Decoding Gen Z: Why 'Ugly' Ads Outperform Polished Creatives

Sarah Jenkins2026-01-014 min read

The psychology behind lo-fi content. Why shot-on-iPhone videos convert 3x better than studio productions on TikTok and Reels.

If your ad looks like an ad, Gen Z will scroll past it in 0.3 seconds. The highest converting creatives in our network right now look like they were filmed by a 19-year-old in their bedroom. Why?

The Authenticity Paradox

High production value signals "corporation." Lo-fi signals "peer recommendation." In an era of deepfakes and AI content, raw, shaky footage feels trustworthy. It implies the creator was so excited about the product they just had to share it.

The "Hook-Hold-Payoff" Framework

  1. The Hook (0-2s): Visually disruptive. "Stop using this!" or "I can't believe I found this."
  2. The Hold (2-15s): fast cuts, text overlays, ASMR sounds. Demonstrate the benefit, don't explain it.
  3. The Payoff (15-30s): The offer. "Link in bio" or "Get 20% off."

How to Brief Creators

Stop sending script. Send "guardrails." Tell them the key selling points, the legally required disclaimers, and then say: "Make it weird. Make it you."
